WHAT:  Hopewell Valley Arts Council at Pennington Day

WHERE:  Howe Commons, South Main Street, Pennington

CONTACT:  [email protected]

The newly formed Hopewell Valley Arts Council will be bringing the visual arts to Pennington Day this year on May 17th, with a small Stampede of oxen.

You’ve been hearing and reading a lot about Olly, the “naked” ox that has been appearing throughout the Valley.  On Pennington Day, go to Howe Commons on South Main Street where you’ll see some of these budding works of art as they’re being decorated, painted and otherwise readied for installation along the streets and throughout the neighborhoods of Hopewell Valley in the late summer.

Visit and you’ll get to see the ox that the art students at Timberlane Middle School are working on under the direction of their teacher Donna Cariola. It’s covered with designs of jigsaw puzzle pieces depicting classical paintings the students have been learning about in class— works by van Gogh, Monet, Munch, O’Keeffe, and others. And see “Mooondrian”, the ox painted by CHS students a la Piet Mondrian.

You can watch Linda Bradshaw paint her ox, ”Rooted,” which is an expanded version of her painting of the same scene.  This ox will bear on its sides detailed renderings of birch trees, with roots extending down to the ox’s hoofs.

In all, two oxen will be worked on, two others that are close to completion will be on display, and there will be one “naked” Olly available for selfies.

A number of Hopewell Valley artists will display their works on the Artists’Walk —Bob Barish, Kristen Birdsey, Kit Greener, Cindy Lailwala, Yetzenia Levia, Carol Lipson, Janet Purcell, Nancy Stark, Dana Weekley, Jane Zamost, and the Pennington School Art Club.  They’re your friends and neighbors, demonstrating what the Hopewell Valley Arts Council is about – showcasing the myriad talents of all the creative people in the Valley’s communities and celebrating art in the every day.

Here’s your chance to preview the Stampede, mingle with oxen and artists alike, and learn about the new Arts Council.  Visit the council’s website,, for more information.
